RTK Applications: GNSS/RTK Base Station

To achieve centimeter-level accuracy in geographic positioning, your RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) receiver requires RTK correction data. There are two main ways to get RTK corrections:

1. From RTK Correction Service (NTRIP) over the internet: This is often the most convenient method because you only need a rover, an internet connection in the operation area, and access to the NTRIP service, which can be either free or paid. If you would like to check the available RTK corrections services in your country, we have prepared a List of services dedicated to your country.

2. From your own RTK Base station: This can be set up in two ways of sending RTK correction data:

  • via Radio Link: Requires a clear line-of-sight between your base station and your rover. Check out Base and Rover kits
  • via Internet: You can transmit RTK corrections from your Base station to NTRIP service (for example, free community-based RTK2Go) via internet and then your Rover will get this RTK correction data if you connect it to this service. This connection can be done through 4G, WiFi, Ethernet, or Bluetooth.
If you own just one Rover, have a reliable internet connection and free high-quality NTRIP correction service in your area, connecting to it is considered the most cost-effective way to get RTK correction data. We have prepared a list of services dedicated to each country. You may want to check them out to find a suitable NTRIP service for you.
But sometimes, installing your own RTK base station is more beneficial then NTRIP service for you in certain scenarios.

When does it make sense to install your own Base station?

No Mountpoint close to you

For high accuracy with your rover, it’s important to connect to a nearby NTRIP service mountpoint, ideally within 35 km of your location. However, if there’s no local NTRIP service covering your area or if the nearest mountpoint is far then 35 km, the accuracy of your RTK data might be compromised. In such situations, setting up your own RTK base station is a great solution. This allows you to receive RTK corrections from your own Base, ensuring the accuracy you need.

Unreliable NTRIP service provider

Using free, community-based NTRIP services often comes with risks. These services may have unexpected downtimes or strict policies that can block your access. Also, the owners of these contributed base stations might turn them off or disconnect without warning, leaving you without the RTK corrections you need. By setting up your own RTK base station, you can avoid these uncertainties and ensure reliable access to RTK corrections.

Unreliable 3G/4G internet in your operational area

NTRIP services, which need a stable internet connection, are less effective in remote or rural areas, where internet connectivity is often unreliable. In this case it is better to install a Base and send rtk correction via radio interface to your Rover.

Cost efficiency over long term

While installing your own RTK base station may seem expensive initially, you avoid ongoing subscription fees from paid NTRIP services and save money over time. This is especially true if you operate fleets of devices needing RTK corrections within a single coverage area. The base station has a long lifespan and can serve several rovers within a 35 km radius, making it more cost-effective than paying for correction services for multiple vehicles. Plus, you can share your RTK Base station with neighbors or charge them for using the correction data from it, which can help cover your costs and even make some money.
