Accurate GNSS compass and antenna pointing system for your boat
Have you been thinking about adding an precice navigation system to your boat but are worried about the cost? High-quality GNSS compass systems typically range from $3,000 to $5,000, putting them out of reach for many. The good news is that you can now build a precise GNSS compass for less than €500.
Now we will share our customer’s project on how affordable GNSS compass is revolutionizing navigation of the boat for those who have struggled with the limitations of traditional systems.

The Challenge: Precision Navigation on a Steel Boat
Our customer owns a 10-meter steel cruiser with an autopilot system to navigate along a GPS track or magnetic compass course.
However, traditional magnetic compasses struggle with accuracy on steel boats. He attempted to improve precision using sensor fusion with MEMS gyros and accelerometers, but even after calibration, the results were not satisfactory.
Looking for a better solution, he explored GNSS compasses but was discouraged by their high cost—often exceeding €3,000.

The Solution: DIY GNSS Compass with ArduSimple
Our customer decided to improve the boat’s navigation by building a GNSS compass using the simpleRTK3B Compass (UM982) receiver together with a WiFi-NMEA converter.
This setup provided:
The GNSS compass replaced the magnetic compass and provided precise orientation for the satellite antenna, allowing it to find satellites in seconds. It also enhanced the autopilot system, enabling the boat to navigate with centimeter-level accuracy.
This setup provided:
- Precise GNSS navigation for accurate boat steering
- Accurate heading for improved satellite antenna alignment

The Result: Precision navigation and Satellite antenna alignment
The customer’s DIY GNSS compass exceeded expectations.
- The satellite antenna quickly aligns with the correct satellite.
- The autopilot system steers the boat with exceptional precision, giving a smooth, track-like ride.
